Fri, 17 Jun 2011 01:38:52 -0700 Entreco update: news from the mutual guarantee fund, a new chapter in Minneapolis and MBA for Startups http://entreco.posterous.com/entreco-update-news-from-the-mutual-guarantee http://entreco.posterous.com/entreco-update-news-from-the-mutual-guarantee

Hello,

Sorry for the long silence after we closed the Indiegogo campaign, but we have been busy getting organized for the next steps for the Mutual Guarantee Fund.

This email is the update on where we stand, plus news from the network:

- Indiegogo Mutual Guarantee Fund campaign update

- New chapter in Minneapolis

- Partnership Opportunity: MBA for Startup translations

----------

** INDIEGOGO MUTUAL GUARANTEE FUND CAMPAIGN

Thank you to all for your generous contributions, we were able to raise $8400 through Indiegogo, which translate after fees from Indiegogo (9% since we did not reach our stated goal of $25k) and Community Ventures (fiscal host - 7%) to $6854.92.

This amount is not the amount we were hoping for, but the feedback from entrepreneurs is that even this small amount can help. It can be used for example to pre-pay for services and get discounts that will allow cost reductions.

So we will keep $354.92 for miscellaneous administrative costs related to setting up the account and we will deposit $6500 into a 3 years CD account, to be used as a guarantee for a loan to an entrepreneur from within the Entrepreneur Commons ecosystem.

Details on the loan:

- 3 years loan, can be paid balloon (only interest are paid monthly until the loan is at maturation), no pre-payment penalty

- Interest rate is 4% (1% CD rate plus 3% bank fee to manage the loan)

- Loan documentation fee $495

The guarantee will be offered to an entrepreneur selected by his peers:

- If you are interested in being considered for getting the loan, please add information about your business at http://www.angelsoft.net (the platform we use to communicate within and across Entrepreneur Commons chapters - all Entrepreneur Commons members have access to the platform, if you do not please send an email to request access to marc@dangeard.com with reference to the chapter you belong to).

- Once we have all recommendations from the various chapters in, we will ask members to rate the businesses that applied, and the top rated entrepreneurs will decide among themselves who should get the loan.

----------

** A NEW CHAPTER IN MINNEAPOLIS

We are pleased to announce that we have a new chapter in Minneapolis: the Minneapolis chapter of Entrepreneur Commons already had 2 monthly meetings, with 5 entrepreneurs in the group who are committed to meeting every month. If you are interested in getting in touch with them, you can contact Liz Tufte at ltufte@gmail.com

A big thank you to Liz for getting this chapter going, and a warm welcome to the Minneapolis entrepreneurs who joined us.

----------

** PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITY: MBA FOR STARTUPS TRANSLATION

The London head of chapter - Zulfiqar Deo - has been working on an “MBA for Startup” book. He is now looking at getting the book translated into other languages. Russian and Portuguese translations are already under way, but other languages are still open for translation.

Zulfiqar is offering to share 15% of the book local revenues with members who will translate the book into their local language (or for the local EC chapter if this is done through collaborative work by the members of an EC chapter). For instance, the Athens chapter would get 15% for Greek activities from Greek translation, the Paris chapter would get 15%, etc... And Entrepreneur Commons main organization would get an additional 10% from the sales, which are the savings from not needing an editor for these local versions.

If you want more details, or would like to get involved, please contact Zulfiqar Deo at zooters@gmail.com

Regardless of how much the final number is, we will move forward with the process, so get ready for next steps: all entrepreneurs interested in getting a loan should submit their project through their local chapter. I will send details shortly to confirm how to do this.
Project recommended by local chapters will be voted on and the project identified as having the most chances of success (=paying back the loan) will get the money.

A big thank you to all contributors on the campaign.

Thank you to Foley Lardner LLC, KL Gates, Goldstein Business Immigration, Parisoma and NextSpace for their support of Entrepreneur Commons local chapters.
Thank you to Community Ventures for being the fiscal host for our Indiegogo campaign.

Mon, 21 Mar 2011 14:35:21 -0700 Bo Burlingham and Bill Liao support our campaign, plus other news http://entreco.posterous.com/bo-burlingham-and-bill-liao-support-our-campa http://entreco.posterous.com/bo-burlingham-and-bill-liao-support-our-campa

Hello,

I am very pleased to announce that we are getting great support from many people for our mutual guarantee fund campaign on Indiegogo:
- support from Bo Burlingham and Bill Liao
- support from Melcion Chassagne & Cie
- a great resource for entrepreneurs: http://www.entreoasis.com/

-----

** BO BURLINGHAM AND BILL LIAO ARE SUPPORTING OUR CAMPAIGN

Bo Burlingham, author of the famous "Small Giants - companies that choose to be great instead of big", and editor at large at Inc magazine sent his contribution, and said:
>>
Fascinating idea, Marc. Sort of a Grameen Bank for the rest of us. I sent in my contribution and urge others to do the same.

Bill Liao, one of the co-founders of Xing (the LinkedIn from Europe), also founder of Neo.org and Weforrest.org, also sent his contribution and said:
>>
The mutual guarantee fund model proposed by Entrepreneur Commons is a great way to create the conditions needed to create an eco system in which entrepreneurs can dispel the bonds of scarcity and as a result thrive.

If you have not done so yet, I hope that you will join them and contribute to our mutual guarantee fund campaign too:
http://www.indiegogo.com/Guarantee-Fund-for-Entrepreneur-Commons-2

And when you do, make sure to share the news with your friends through Twitter and Facebook. Most contributions come from people we talked to, through the chapter meetings, or through personal communication.

-----

** MELCION CHASSAGNE & CIE WILL GIVE US $1000 WHEN WE REACH $6350 (MATCHING CONTRIBUTION)

The partners of Melcion Chassagne & Cie support the Mutual Guarantee Fund campaign and they have offered to match the next $1000 donations with another $1000 of their own, so a new "hero" for the campaign is on the way. We will get their contribution as soon as we reach $6350, so please jump it now and ask your friend to do so too.

Note that this is a great way for us to get to our goal faster: if we can find corporate sponsors for the campaign we can get larger contributions into the campaign. If you know of corporations, law offices, accounting firms or other who could be interested in sponsoring the Mutual Guarantee Fund campaign on Indiegogo, please send them our info:

Fri, 18 Mar 2011 17:58:00 -0700 Disappointing beginning for the Startup America Partnership http://entreco.posterous.com/disappointing-beginning-for-the-startup-ameri http://entreco.posterous.com/disappointing-beginning-for-the-startup-ameri

Almost one month after the announcement of the Startup America Partnership I watched yesterday the webinar that was supposed to tell us everything about what is going on. Except so far there is not much coming out, and most of all no transparency in the process. The whole thing is managed by the Case Foundation and Kauffman foundation, we know that much. But then how can you participate?

If the government is asking for help from the people on the ground, how do we make sure that the Partnership is actually representative of the community of entrepreneurs?
Several people asked the question during the webinar, and the answer was that you are welcome to send an email, but it is not clear who reads it and what they do with it. Maybe you will be invited and maybe not.
We can give the Partnership the credit that it is still early in the game, and that they need to get organized before they can open the door to newcomers, but let's hope they will get to this issue faster rather than later. Pushing a few initiatives that somebody somewhere has decided are worth spreading is a very elitist approach to the issue rather than the democratic process that all entrepreneurs deserve. And there is enough work to be done that we can include everybody in the conversation. So the sooner it happens, the better.

Hello,

I am happy to report that our campaign to raise the mutual guarantee fund is doing good, and we are now at $2650, including a $1000 from one generous "hero". Thank you to all of you who have already contributed.

If you are registered to this list you have some interest in Entrepreneur Commons, and what we are doing to support entrepreneurs, including what we are trying to do on the funding side.

And if this is the case, could you contribute $25 (or more, you can be a hero too) to the campaign? You can do it here:

http://www.indiegogo.com/Guarantee-Fund-for-Entrepreneur-Commons-2

Note that this is a tax deductible contribution.

** Why you should contribute? **

- This mutual guarantee fund is for entrepreneurs and it could be you: you today, or you tomorrow if you are just getting started, or maybe the you from a few years ago when you were looking for funding for your venture.

- And if this entrepreneur is not you, you should still contribute because entrepreneurs are the vital force of our economy, and we need to reduce the barriers to entry into entrepreneurship to build a better future for every one of us. Funding is one of these barriers.

** you can do more **

Now that we are talking about working together on this, and while I will keep sending email to people I know who could be interested in contributing, the campaign would be even more successful if everyone on this list sets a goal for himself or herself to raise at least $100 through direct donation or through contributions from personal connections.

Note that this would also help us get featured on the indiegogo site as they measure the activity level of a campaign, number of updates and the pace at which the money is getting raised. If we can be on the front page of the Indiegogo website it will be all the more publicity for Entrepreneur Commons. And I am sure that once we have raised the money we will get a lot of attention and a lot more donations from people outside of the current ecosystem, so that we can do more loans to more of you.

** some clarifications **

During these first few days I was asked 2 questions:

1. Why $25k loan when we raise $30k?

Indiegogo is taking 4% commission on the raise if it is successful, and 9% if we do not reach our goal. That's $1200. Then Community Ventures, which is hosting the project so that it can be tax deductible, is taking 7% management fee, which is another $2100. So after fees we have $26700, of which I figured we should set aside some amount to pay for legal costs (contract for the loan), and therefore $25k is what comes out to be the right number. It is also a good number because this is on average what it tooks for the companies who made the Inc Top 5000 list to get into the list. Average does not mean that it will be enough for everybody, but it is a good amount for a lot of projects.

2. I was asked why not raise more, and why not leverage the money with the bank.

- Raising more can be done, but it does not have to be done in this campaign. Raising more through one campaign would be taking the risk of not reaching the goal set, and pay 9% fee instead of 4% fee. Not a good idea. But of course we will not stop at $25k

- Leveraging the money will happen. For example in Europe the bank will be happy if the mutual guarantee represents between 2% and 8% of the total loan amount, So we can get a nice leverage as we move forward. But it will take establishing a track record of low default. The first loan may be no leverage, but we will get it more and more as we go. This is the whole point of starting now and implementing the process so that we can get to that next level.

** it's time to join **

If you have read this far, you have already done most of the work, so please join us and start with a contribution here:

And then let's have fun with the campaign and let's see who can raise the most money :-)

Best

Marc

From my friend Boku Kodama:

A 2-Year MBA program will cost you as much as $100,000 and come to find out: won't give you any greater edge in your business skills, no signifiant edge in how much you'll make or improve your rise to the top of the corporate ladder. It might be just as good and far cheaper to rent the 1967 movie, "How to Succeed In Business Without Really Trying" and use the techniques in that musical. Singing and dancing are recommended options.

These are the conclusions from a research entitled "The End of Business Schools? Less Success Than Meets the Eye," an exhaustive study of 40 years of data on the nation's MBA programs published in the Academy of Management Learning and Education back in September 2002.

You've probably never heard of this study because the humungous hammer of the Business School industry has successfully nailed the information into a coffin.  Today, we have more than doubled the number of MBA programs across the country because we've been lead to believe that an MBA will provide advancements to our careers. It is one of the most financially lucrative courses for universities, but for the majority of graduates, it means 12 years of debt.

The real truth from the vast library of scientific research on successful performance is eyeopening, simple to understand and downright cheap. The Rules of Succeeding in business and anything else is quite clear: learn the fundamentals and go out and see if they work in your field of interest because the "doing" is where you find out what works and what doesn't. Then, what doesn't work is corrected and simply put, you've learned what can succeed. If you need examples, try Warren Buffett, Ophray Winfried, Alice Waters, Steve Jobs and Bill Gates.

If you're like the tens of thousands who have been layed off, been working a thankless job to pay off that student loan or been on unemployment longer than you can remember, then learn the fundamentals, experiment without risks and see how much you can truly accomplish. Actually, you'll be blown away by how much you can achieve.

You'll not only save $99,950, you'll actually learn skills that'll will serve a lifetime. Enrollment for the Urban FIRE entrepreneurship training begins now for our final 2011 semester beginning April 9. Enrollment is limited to 20 over the 12-week semester meeting each Saturday from 9am to 12pm.

** A MUTUAL GUARANTEE FUND FOR ENTREPRENEURS IN THE US
I am very happy to announce that we have found a fiscal sponsor that will allow Entrepreneur Commons to raise money through Indiegogo for a mutual guarantee fund.
We have now officially launched the campaign here: http://goo.gl/Jx7ht
The money will be collected by Community Ventures and will be placed into a CD account at a partner bank to serve as a guarantee for a loan.
We are looking for $30k which will allow us to do one loan of $25k to one entrepreneur in the US. And while this is very limited in scope and a not-so-big amount, it is a big step forward that will allow us to implement the peer-selection process. And it is a simple solution that we may be able to implement for other countries.
Whether you can or cannot contribute money, please join us and share the info with your friends and family so that we can raise the money: you can tweet, post the info on your facebook page, and email your friends to let as many people as possible know about what we are doing.
Note that Community Ventures is a 501c3 so donations may be deductible.
